Photos: Pennsylvania St.

This is my new favorite stretch of road in Indianapolis:

This particular picture is looking south on Pennsylvania St. near 24th St., but the tree canopy is pretty amazing all the way from Fall Creek down to 16th St. I've been driving through this area a lot recently, having already gone to The Goose four times since they opened (duck, salami, great beer, beef ground on the spot, that place is the best!). The area is so cool looking -- especially with the leaves changing color right now -- that I frequently find myself driving well below the posted 35MPH speed limit to take in the ambiance. American Forests has a page about Urban Tree Canopy Goals if this interests you.

If I had my druthers, they'd reduce the speed limit on Pennsylvania to 25MPH and allow parking on both sides, effectively choking it off as a commuter route. Progress has been made in gobbling up the parking lots on the west side of the road -- which generally serve businesses fronting Meridian -- and I'd like to see that continue.

Let me (and others) know about your favorite stretches of road around Indy in the comments.

About that stretch of Penn, the easiest way to reduce speeds to 25 would be to change it back to a two-way street (which would be awesome).

Anyways, I guess my favorite street to drive down is Washington Blvd from 38th all the way to Kessler Blvd (or Central, or Penn). For walking I like Virginia Ave in Fountain Sq and Mass ave. I've also enjoyed walking the winding lanes of Irvington. For biking, the Monon, of course!

Agreed about the M-K streets. I love slowly driving through those neighborhoods on my way to or from Broad Ripple.

Amazingly, I've actually never been to Irvington. I've been meaning to to go over there but just have never gotten around to it. Are there any places in particular I should check out?

I'll third the Meridian-Kessler thing. I love to walk or drive all around M-K and fantasize about living there someday.

I like this stretch of Penn too. I work at one end (just across fall creek), my wife works at the other (at 65/70), so I do the circuit of Penn and Delaware just about every day. I love the trees on Penn and the old mansions and new shops on Delaware.
Also, I just stopped by The Goose for the first time yesterday. Quite expensive in the deli area, so I'll probably continue to shop places closer to home. But the sandwiches and gelato looked good for lunch. I also picked up a few bombers and some Vosges chocolate (something I've been wanting in Indy for a long time). The owner was quite nice and helpful in selecting beers.

In Irvington, I would start at Washington and Audubon and work south to the circle, then continue wandering and find your way back. Be sure to go a little bit east of Audubon on Washington...and Johnson St as well, some neat places there. I haven't been there in a couple of years but I guess there's some new stuff in Irvington worth checking out.

Thanks for the tips Kevin. I'm heading up to South Bend this weekend to (hopefully) watch ND avoid ending their 43 game winning streak against Navy, but maybe I can head over there next weekend.

I feel so unoriginal, but I, too, love Meridian-Kessler. Especially the Washington Blvd. drag. When I used to live on 46th, I'd take Washington to 38th every morning on my way to work. I also love the stretch of Penn. Corrnd wrote about. I also love any number of streets over in the Butler-Tarkington area.

My favorite is 16th st. south on many streets - New Jersey, Park, Alabama, Central, etc. Talk about some awesome old mansions shaded by amazing street canopies.
