Photos: Under the Facade

Construction work continues at Allen Plaza (Virginia and Pennsylvania Sts.). As part of the construction work, some windows were removed revealing what appears to be an old facade for this building. Not only was the previous facade covered up, it looks like an architectural flourish at the top of the window arches was hacked off in order to put the new facade over the old.

Amazing.

Is that part of the old Indiana National Building that was there many years ago? It was an ornate building that ran to the point of Virginia and Penn.

I think you're thinking of this one:

See old photos at the bottom of that post.

Click here if that link above doesn't work.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the developer did what Rick Coombes' design team did to the Bright Building (a.k.a the former Brenner Luggage building)? They were able to peel off the “modern” skin and replace most of the broken or missing architectural elements. That whole block looks better because one building was “corrected.”

Please post more photos as the true skin of the building is revealed.

It would be nice to see, but unfortunately with the damage done, the cost would probably bankrupt the project.

It is sad to see the old jewels we have lost.

I strongly support the restoration of this hidden gem. I'm actually surprised there isn't so much noise about this. They have discovered a hidden classic facade(which I might remind you is something Indy horribly lacks when compared to it's neighbors.) that could be restored (the damage to it is purely cosmetic.)and go quiet well with the Majestic Building.
