Photos: St. Weyertech Building

I'm not sure what to call this building. Most recently, it functioned as Section 8 housing under the name Weyerbacher Terrace Apartments, though it was originally built as St. Vincent Hospital in 1913. St. Vincent Hospital operated out of this building until 1974 when it moved to its current location on 86th St, after which the building was converted to federally subsidized housing. When Weyerbacher Terrace was forcibly closed in 2002, it fell into disuse and disrepair. It was subsequently sold by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to the City of Indianapolis in 2004 for $10 and then to Ivy Tech Community College in 2006 for $1. Ivy Tech planned to rehabilitate the building and convert it to classroms, though there is some controversy over their current plans, as, due to technical difficulties with rehabbing the building to their desired use, they have instead proposed to demolish the building and construct a new structure specifically for modern classrooms.

Here's how the building looks as of August 2008.

Someone posted quite a collection of photos of the interior of the building last year on flickr, so be sure to check those out as well.

Ivy Tech paid $1 for the entire building....the least they could do is keep the exterior intact...it's a beautiful building. I hope they don't just tear it down.

I love the name you gave it.

I can't figure out why the local community development corporation is so silent.

The thing I don't understand is why do I seem to be one of ten people on all of the development forums/blogs who don't see what is attractive about this building except for the building material? It looks like at least 4 different architectural styles were slopped together into an oddly shaped building.

I truly have no opinion on what should be done, as I don't have all the facts, but Ivy Tech should make to use the money the most efficient way possible. Especially if Mitch gives everyone 2 free years of school. They'll need the space.

Here's a nice piece of trivia for you: When St. Vincent vacated this facility for the 86th Street facility the entire move only took three and a third hours.

I use to live there as weyerbacher and they should have kept it weyerbacher. So many memories in 1997 😔😔 my very first apt. 145 west 26st apt c204. During the time I stayed there, a murder in the elevator of the "A" building drove me out. Mysterious elevator doors opening up on its on. Pictures flying off the walls, and mysterious writing on the elevator walls could be found all over the building. Mysterious dark figures walking around at night in the courtyard of the "c" building. Gates opening on its on, And alot of other spooky things.
